YAMAHA

Yamaha is a word that conjures up a sporting image with any motorcycle enthusiast; though if its successes in road racing, motocross or trials are combined, both Honda and Suzuki could probably boast as many if not more victories! The reason for this image l ies in Yamaha's unwavering commitment to racing since the early 1960s, which has included both pukka works machinery and the offering of production `over-the-counter' bikes for both club and national riders around the world. Besides two-wheelers the company has also manufactured musical instruments (including some superb pianos, snowmobiles, industrial engines, marine engines, lawnmowers, unmanned helicopters, industrial robots and even swimming pools. 8" X 9"

YAMAHA RACING MOTORCYCLES

Yahama is unquestionably one of the great names in motorcycle racing. The recent celebration of thirty years of 250cc TD and TZ production racers is unparalleled in the sport, and clearly demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to racing, rather than just building and selling the bikes commercially. It was Yamaha who produced the first over-the-counter racing superbike, the TZ750, which became an icon in the US during the 1970s; it was Yamaha again who kept the 500cc GP racing class alive by brokering the production of the Harris and ROC racers. This commitment has reaped its own reward: over 350 GP victories to date. Yamaha decided to branch out from manufacturing musical instruments and enter the motorcycle industry at just the right time, when a massive shakedown had considerably thinned out the competition. Using a German DKW as a baseline, Yamaha built the YA1 and never looked back. Here Colin MacKellar, with the help of interviews with some of the key personalities that influenced Yamaha's fortunes and covering both technical advances and racing success, charts the development of the YA1 and its successors. He looks at the early factory RD and RA racers, the giant-killing TDs and TRs and the mythical TZ750 superbike, before rounding off the story with an analysis of the TZ250, the mainstay of production racing over the last twenty years, and the OW and YZR factory racers in the Blue Ribband 500cc GP class. 7.75" X 10"
