Kawasaki - largest and smallest of the Japanese motorcycle firms, a firm `to let the good times. roll', the Green Meanies, and `who can catch a Kawasaki'. Different from the others but no less successful, often the market leader and known as `King of the road'. In time, the name simply meant - `Performance'. Kawasaki Heavy Industries originated. in 1878 when Shozo Kawasaki founded a shipyard at Tsukiji, Tokyo, from which came an industrial giant. Ships, trains, civil engineering, steel works, aircraft, all became part of the massive conglomerate which was one of the original zaibatsu, the economic cartels which drove Japan from feudal to industrial so quickly. There was a tentative involvement with motorcycles and their engines in the early-1950s, but it was 1962 before the first Kawasaki machine, a modest 125, appeared, and then essentially as a means of promoting the company name. Although well known and respected in its fields, the firm was little known to the public at large, so the motorcycles came as a means to correct this Earlier, the firm had become involved with Meguro, a pre-war Japanese motorcycle firm who later became best known for a twin modelled on a BSA. They established the Meihatsu name for a range using Kawasaki engines, but these had limited success, although this activity gave them a grounding in the business. 9.5” X 12”
